The Manse - Exterior & Garden
Devonport Studio is a self-contained annex of the Manse, an historic villa built at the end of the 19th century. In the early 20th century it was home to the local presbyterian minister, Ivo Bertram where he and his wife ran a small school downstairs. Ivo’s son James Bertram went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, journalist, writer, relief worker, prisoner of war and a professor of English at Victoria University. He was an extraordinary New Zealander whose achievements in China as a young journalist in the 1930’s and early 1940’s earned him the respect of the senior leadership in China of that era.
The house has been redecorated inside and out over the past two years, and there is a swimming pool that you are free to use in the warmer months. There is a private patio area just outside your front door and a much larger secluded area with seating and BBQ out the back. There is a private entrance into the adjacent, wonderful Mt Cambria Reserve at the rear. Two stable fishing kayaks with rollers are there for you to enjoy.
